Overview

In collaboration with the British Council, this dual exhibition presents two installations that respond to AlUla’s land, history, and traditions. In Cries in the Desert, musson+retallick and Wilderthorn craft six poetic film sketches - brief, emotive impressions shaped by AlUla’s terrain, sounds, and spirit. Created with archaeologist Mohamed Alhusayni, the films echo six layers of landscape, six Old Town chiefs, and six stages of date ripening. In contrast, What Is Luxury by Studio Ü deconstructs traditional garments to question modern notions of value, suggesting true luxury lies in care, continuity, and cultural preservation.

The Installations

CRIES IN THE DESERT

Artists musson+retallick and Wilderthorn have created six short films which reflect the evolution and atmosphere of AlUla. The films are referred to as ‘sketches’ - emotive moments in time caught by the artists as they absorbed the landscape, sounds and culture of AlUla. The artwork was created with the support of archaeologist Mohamed Alhusayni and references six layers of landscape, six chiefs of Old Town and six phases of date ripening.

WHAT IS LUXURY

STUDIO Ü explores beauty in what is often overlooked. Traditional garments and familiar fabrics are reworked through deconstruction and care, questioning how value is defined. The project suggests that true luxury lies in preservation and transformation - revealing potential without erasing history.
