A true icon of AlUla, the elephant shaped rock formation stretches up 52 metres into the sky, its warm-hued sandstone shaped by wind and water erosion over the course of millions of years. Known in Arabic as Jabal AlFil, Elephant Rock is particularly magical at dusk when the fading sun casts a bewitching deep crimson light over the trunk and body of AlUla’s famous geological pachyderm.

To truly soak up the natural spectacle of Elephant Rock as the evening approaches, visitors are encouraged to find a seat nearby and warm themselves at a welcoming fire pit to combat the desert chill while enjoying something to eat and drink.

No, Elephant Rock is a beloved feature of AlUla and must be protected. Photography, of course, is permitted.

What time can I visit?

Elephant Rock is open daily from 17:00 to 01:00 (last order 00:40) with extended hours on Thursdays and Fridays from 17:00 to 02:00 (last order 01:40). As dusk descends, Elephant Rock is illuminated while music plays gently in the background for a magical experience.

How can I get there?

Elephant Rock is a 20-minute drive northeast of Old Town. You can drive yourself to the site via Highway 70, where you’ll find free parking. A wooden path leads from the car park through the entrance to Elephant Rock. As Elephant Rock is an AlUla icon, many group tours or packages include it as a stop on their itineraries.

Are there places nearby to buy food and drink?

You can get burgers and shakes at SALT or an assortment of drinks at Elephant Rock Cafe by Key. Shisha is also available. Visitors are encouraged to find a seat near a firepit and enjoy the changing colours of Elephant Rock as the sun sets.
