The second edition of the Saudi Tour, a 2.1 stage race on the UCI calendar sanctioned by the Saudi Arabia Cycling Federation, featured five stages, including three suitable for sprinters, from 1st to 5th February 2022.
This event was live streamed worldwide on the Experience AlUla YouTube channel. You can still re-live the action and watch each stage!
The 2022 edition of the Saudi Tour took riders on an incredible 5 stage journey through the beautiful landscapes, wondrous heritage sites and challenging desert terrain of AlUla. Technical director Jean-Marc Marino compared the ascent to the Harrat Viewpoint to the Angliru of La Vuelta! 16 international teams competed for a chance to win this prestigious title.
5 Stages of the Saudi Tour:
Stage 1: Winter Park - Winter Park, 198km
The longest and most scenic route of the Saudi Tour brought riders right in front of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hegra.
Stage 2: Taibah University - Abu Rakha, 163.9km
A decisive stage for the overall classification, Stage 2 was “a terrain for strong men.” Following many ups and downs in the breathtaking landscapes of AlUla, the pan flat last 500 metres will come after 1.7km of climbing at an average gradient of 9%.
Stage 3: Tayma Hadaj Well - AlUla Old Town, 181.2km
Stage 3 took the riders from Tayma Hadaj Well, one of the biggest wells of Saudi Arabia, to AlUla Old Town. Cyclists ended this stage in front of AlUla Fort, at the end of a 1km long straight line.
Stage 4: Winter Park - Harrat Viewpoint, 149.3km
The most anticipated stage of the Saudi Tour to the Harrat Viewpoint offered riders the contrast of a pan flat road before the last 40km. “The finale was superb and really very hard,” Marino described.
Stage 5: AlUla Old Town - AlUla Old Town, 138.9km
Stage 5 took riders on a large circuit around AlUla Old Town. Cycling around the perimeter of the AlUla Oasis, this stage ended in the historic old city, bringing the Saudi Tour to an epic finale.
A fun, public ride also took place at Winter Park. Tourists and residents alike took to the road on their bikes, cycling 9.8 km around the Winter Park area of AlUla. With prizes and t-shirts given to participants, AlUla was excited to engage with the community!
