Out Of This World: AlUla Achieves DarkSky Park Certification

The ancient city has achieved its DarkSky Park Certification from DarkSky International and is on its way to developing AlUla Manara Observatory in collaboration with the SETI Institute

AlUla has officially achieved DarkSky Park Certification from DarkSky International, marking a major milestone for the region and placing it firmly on the map as a global dark sky destination. This certification, awarded to the Al Manara site and Gharameel, is the first of its kind not just in Saudi Arabia but across the entire MENA region.

AlUla is also collaborating with the SETI Institute to develop the AlUla Manara Observatory, a world-class center for space and astronomy sciences. This partnership aims to position AlUla as a leading destination for both astro-tourism and astronomical research, with the observatory set to play a significant role in combining AlUla’s rich heritage of stargazing with modern scientific exploration, offering visitors a chance to delve into the mysteries of the cosmos.

AlUla’s remote desert location, far from city lights, provides some of the world’s clearest skies, making it an exceptional spot for stargazing and astrophotography year-round.

Legacy of the Stars

AlUla’s connection to the stars is deeply rooted in history. Ancient civilizations, much like those in other parts of the world, relied on the stars for navigation, agriculture, and mythology. From Mesopotamians to the Greeks, these societies observed the night sky to make sense of the world around them, shaping their cultures through the study of the cosmos. AlUla, too, followed these ancient practices, and the AlUla Manara Observatory will continue this legacy, blending ancient wisdom with cutting-edge science.

Arab scholars were pioneers in the study of the stars, and their influence remains in the night sky today. For instance, Aldebaran—the bright red star also known as alpha Tauri—derives its name from the Arabic “ad-dabaran,” meaning "the Follower," as it trails the Pleiades cluster, or ath-Thurayyā in Arabic. Many star names in modern catalogues have Arabic origins, a testament to the region’s historical contributions to astronomy.

Experience stargazing in AlUla

The Gharameel area, with its stunning rock formations, provides perfect stargazing conditions, while Harrat Viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramic views of AlUla's historic sites, including Dadan and the AlUla Oasis. The upcoming AlUla Manara Observatory will further enhance these experiences, opening up new opportunities for locals and visitors to explore the wonders of the night sky.
